At least 12 people were injured, including six children, in a shooting near Florida A&M University's football stadium on homecoming weekend.

By the numbers: Eleven of the 12 injured suffered gunshot wounds. Tallahassee police said Sunday that six victims remained hospitalized and five had been discharged, with one person being treated for critical injuries.

  • The department had earlier reported at least three people with serious injuries and nine in stable condition.

Zoom in: The preliminary investigation indicates a fight broke out before the shooting, which followed the football game in a crowded area, according to police. No arrests have been made, and investigators are working to identify those responsible.

What they're saying: "We know there are people who saw something, heard something or may have video that could help us piece together exactly what happened," Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said. "No detail is too small, and no piece of information should go unreported."

  • FAMU head coach Quinn Gray wrote that "senseless violence has to stop," adding: "No one should leave our celebration in an ambulance, and no child should ever be caught in gunfire."

What's next: Police have opened a dedicated tip line and a link for the public to upload photos and video. University President Marva Johnson said she shares in the outrage and profound sadness at the shooting, and the university said its campus remained safe.

Why it matters: Homecoming at a historically Black university draws tens of thousands of alumni and families into a few blocks. A crowd that size turns one argument into a dozen casualties, and the youngest person hit was a child.
