US strikes Iran again as Qatar offers a two-day path to nuclear talks

The limited attack hit an air defense system while Tehran reviewed a proposal to reopen inspections and the Strait of Hormuz.

The US carried out new targeted strikes on Iran Friday even as Qatari mediators presented a bridge plan for renewed nuclear negotiations.

The big picture: President Donald Trump said the military hit an Iranian air defense system on Friday, calling the operation minor. Iranian state media reported two explosions in the Suza area of Qeshm Island, inside the waterway used for oil shipments.

  • Trump told reporters the target was knocked out within about 15 minutes, and US officials said Iran has been rebuilding military infrastructure damaged earlier in the conflict.

Between the lines: Qatar separately presented a two-day bridge proposal designed to move Washington and Tehran toward talks on Iran's nuclear program after more than eight months of war.

  • The proposal would pair a lifted US port blockade and release of some frozen Iranian funds with renewed international inspections at bombed nuclear sites. Iran would then reopen the Strait of Hormuz under a temporary arrangement.

Yes, but: Iran says nuclear talks require sanctions relief, unfrozen assets, compensation for war damage and an end to regional hostilities. The White House declined to comment on the proposal, while Trump said the sides have been talking.

By the numbers: Iran holds 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Weapons-grade material is enriched to 90%.

What's next: If the bridge measures hold, the proposal calls for broader negotiations over Iran's enriched uranium stockpile and other parts of its program. Gulf governments are pressing both sides to choose that channel over another round of escalation.

Why it matters: A deal could lower the risk to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and ease the fuel-price pressure that has spread through the global economy.
