Protesters breach a Microsoft data center site as AI backlash spreads

The Amsterdam occupation opened two days of planned actions across 15 European countries over the power and water demands of AI.

Protesters entered a Microsoft data center construction site in Amsterdam Friday, climbed a crane and clashed with police.

The big picture: The Amsterdam breach marked the sharpest action in a coordinated European campaign seeking a moratorium on large data center projects. Protesters climbed a crane, set off flares and occupied part of the construction site before police began escorting people out.

  • Nathan Timmer of the group Geef Tegengas told local broadcaster AT5 that the occupation was intended to stop construction. Pro-Palestinian activists also joined the demonstration.

By the numbers: Dozens of groups planned events Friday and Saturday in 15 countries, including Ireland, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom.

  • About 100 people protested outside Poland's parliament, while a dozen demonstrated near a data center outside Berlin. A previous Italian rally drew more than 1,000 people and representatives from roughly 40 local committees.

The other side: European officials and technology companies argue that the region needs more computing capacity to compete in AI. Activists say construction is moving faster than public consultation and environmental review.

Between the lines: The dispute has moved beyond zoning hearings. Microsoft is now the immediate target of a cross-border movement focused on electricity, water, land use and the social purposes of the computing inside these facilities.

What's next: Organizers planned a second day of actions Saturday, including marches and demonstrations around additional projects. Police were still clearing the Amsterdam site late Friday.

Why it matters: AI expansion depends on thousands of physical projects, and organized local resistance can delay the power connections, permits and construction schedules behind the industry's growth forecasts.
