OpenAI fires three researchers over mishandled sensitive information

At least two of the three worked on safety research, and the company says the information went to an outside group that evaluates AI models.

OpenAI has fired three researchers for allegedly mishandling sensitive company information, including work involving an external organization that analyses AI models.

Zoom in: “Our investigation confirmed that these individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures, violating our policies and breaking the trust essential to our work,” a spokesperson told the BBC.

  • The BBC understands the three were removed for allegedly mishandling information, and not for raising safety concerns.

The big picture: OpenAI said this week it has notified more than 100 organizations about incidents involving unauthorised activity linked to its AI systems, while adding that notification alone does not mean private information was accessed.

Between the lines: The firings land days after Trump hosted leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, SpaceX, Meta and Google at the White House and posted what he called a “morally binding” AI agreement.

Why it matters: Outside evaluators are the main independent check on frontier AI models, so the rules on what labs may share with them shape how much the public can verify about safety.
