A new AP-NORC poll finds 26% of US adults approve of President Trump’s handling of the economy, and just 17% approve of his handling of the cost of living.

By the numbers: 65% of adults say higher-than-usual prices result from Trump’s policies, while 67% of Republicans say the prices are due to factors beyond his control. In October 2022, 44% blamed Biden’s policies.

  • 69% say his handling of the cost of living has gone worse than expected, including 52% of Republicans, and 73% say the country is heading in the wrong direction.

Zoom in: About half of adults are extremely or very concerned about affording gas, up from 39% in July, and about half say the same about affording food.

The big picture: 71% disapprove of his handling of Iran and 69% say the war there has not been worth fighting. Only 17% say Trump keeps his promises.

Why it matters: Midterms are weeks away, and AP notes Trump has asked voters to treat him as though he were on the ballot, which makes the cost of living his central test.

  • The poll surveyed 2,140 adults from September 24 to 28, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
