Kimi Antonelli clinched the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship on Sunday by finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the sport's youngest ever champion at 20.

By the numbers: Antonelli needed only ninth place at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and took third, with Max Verstappen winning the race from Lewis Hamilton in second.

The backstory: Sebastian Vettel had held the record as the youngest champion, winning in 2010 aged 23, when Antonelli was four years old.

  • Antonelli is the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953 and the sport's 36th, and this is Mercedes' first drivers' title since Hamilton's in 2020 and the team's tenth.

Zoom in: He led the standings from the third round in Japan, won five of the first six races, took nine wins in all and failed to score points only twice, both times through mechanical failures.

  • One of those nine came from 19th on the grid at his home race at Monza.

What they're saying: Race engineer Peter Bonnington said it was a very special day and that a young man had broken the record for the youngest world champion, adding: "It is the first of many I reckon."

Between the lines: Teammate George Russell began the season as the pre-season favorite, and both Russell and Hamilton had to win in Mexico to keep the title alive, yet Antonelli's third place would have clinched it regardless.

What's next: Four meetings remain on the calendar, and Verstappen's win from fifth on the grid gives Red Bull momentum heading into next season.

Why it matters: A 20-year-old in his second season just beat a seven-time champion and a grid of veterans, which resets how early teams gamble on juniors and what a rookie seat is worth.
