TOP STORY TODAY

Moonshot Launched

Google launched a refrigerator-sized satellite yesterday carrying four of its AI chips, the first test of whether data center hardware can run in space. The company says it has made contact and begun testing.

The satellite flies in an orbit where its solar panels are almost never in shadow, so it needs no batteries. The chips run 15 minutes at a time, because heat has nowhere to go in a vacuum.

Google plans two more satellites next year to test laser links between them. Repairs are the open question: a technician can walk into a data center on Earth, but not one circling hundreds of miles overhead. Google's own announcement .

60M Trump Accounts

Every eligible child under 18 with a Social Security number now has a federal investment account, after Treasury auto-enrolled more than 60 million children this week. Before the change, about 7 million had signed up.

Parents still have to claim the account. For children born between 2025 and 2028, claiming is also what triggers the one-time $1,000 government deposit. Unclaimed means unfunded. Who qualifies?

You claim it through the official Trump Accounts app on iOS or Android, by verifying your identity and your relationship to the child. The money can't be withdrawn until the year the child turns 18.

The move: claim your child's account in the app, especially if they were born after 2024 | Treasury's instructions for claiming

Caitlin Clark Shoes

Caitlin Clark's first signature Nike shoe went on sale yesterday at 10 a.m . and was gone from Nike's site and most major retailers by about 11. Anything under a size 15 was cleared out. S ee our previous write-up.

The Caitlin 1 retails for $140 in adult sizes, with kids' pairs at $105 and $115. Resale listings hit $200 to $300 within hours, and the average on one resale site sat near $190.

Clark signed with Nike in 2024 for a reported $28 million over eight years, with the signature shoe a condition of the deal. Six more colorways are already scheduled, starting Oct. 23.

7 Japanese Habits that Cost $0

A Finnish creator spent months studying Japanese habits. All seven cost nothing:

  • Cared for, not flawless. A tea garden is swept, but a few fallen leaves stay.
  • Take only the space you need. Your bag, your voice, your phone.
  • Mottainai. Before buying, ask if you'll use it fully. Before tossing, check what's left.
  • Reset before you leave. Japanese kids clean their classrooms daily. It's why fans clean stadiums.
  • Hara hachi bu. Stop at about 80% full, before heavy.
  • Shinrin-yoku. Sit in a forest 15 minutes. In one study, that alone lowered cortisol versus sitting in a city.
  • Shoshin. Beginner's mind. Convince yourself you've reached the top and you stop climbing.

How to Actually Start a Journal

Peter McKinnon has filled dozens of pocket notebooks over five years. His advice for starting: ignore almost everything.

  • Buy one small notebook and any pen you already own. Skip the leather cover, the fountain pen, the stamps. Those come later, if ever.
  • Then write whatever. His first book was grocery lists and shot lists, with a December entry that reads in full: "Having a real hard time getting anything done today." Some pages just say nothing for four months, because he quit and came back.

His one rule : finish two notebooks. By then you'll have found your rhythm, and the accomplishment is bigger than it sounds. When was the last time you filled one?

A prompt for page one : what's the best thing that happened to you this week?

Also in this video : Why he quit for four months (10:48), the hack when you don't know what to write (9:21), why he stopped making to-do lists (13:17), and the habit trick that finally made it stick (17:57).
