Good Morning. The rate you've never checked just touched 5%, and it could add about $160 a month to a $400,000 mortgage. Plus, trauma releasing exercises, living like The Gilmore Girls, and Sweeney’s nude ad controversy (first time here? Join 523,000 Betterists ).

TOP STORY TODAY

Treasury Yield Peaks

The 10-year Treasury yield touched 5% yesterday , a level briefly hit in 2023 and otherwise unseen since 2007. Energy prices, expected rate hikes and government debt pushed it up from 4.15% in January.

The 10-year sets the tone for mortgages and car loans. The average 30-year mortgage rate hit 6.76% last week, up from 6.15% in January. On a $400,000 loan, that adds roughly $160 a month.

The Federal Reserve announces its next rate decision this week. Lenders quote different rates for the same borrower, and shaving even a fraction of a point can save thousands over a 30-year mortgage.

Ballot Rule Paused

The Supreme Court on Monday blocked a Trump administration plan to restrict mail ballots for November's midterms. Two justices, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, dissented. Voting is already underway, and mail ballots account for nearly a third of votes cast .

The plan would have required uniform envelopes and voter lists uploaded to an online portal, letting the Postal Service refuse noncompliant ballots. A whistleblower report warned one bar code error could scrap an entire batch.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh signaled he could back the plan in a future case. For now, ballots go out as usual, and many request deadlines fall one to two weeks before the November 3 election. Every state's absentee ballot request deadline .

Oldest App Trail Hiker

Dale Sanders, 91, finished the 2,193-mile Appalachian Trail on Aug. 31, reclaiming his title as the oldest person to complete it . He first set the record at 82 in 2017, then lost it to a friend in 2021.

He fell 71 times along the way, including a tumble 200 yards from the finish. On one 12-mile day, he lay down on the trail, napped for two minutes, then got up and kept hiking.

A pinched nerve hospitalized him in Maine, and he nearly quit. His wife talked him into finishing. He also holds the record as the oldest person to paddle the Mississippi River, a trip he began at 87.

Read 200 Books a Year (Without Speed Reading)

Ryan Holiday reads a couple hundred books a year while running a bookstore, writing books, and raising two kids. No audiobooks, no summaries, no hacks. In this 16-minute video , he breaks down his rules.

Some of these rules include:

  • Always carry a book, so it replaces scrolling
  • Read with a pen and argue in the margins
  • Quit bad books early using his rule: 100 pages minus your age.
  • And when a book grabs you, buy it on the spot

Also in this video : why speed reading is a scam (11:42), how to keep a commonplace book (6:36), why you should reread your favorites (4:14), and the "anti-library" on his nightstand (12:06)

A Doctor Swapped Meditation for “Shaking”

Yousef, a medical doctor, spent two years doing TRE (tension and trauma releasing exercises) for 20 minutes a day. He says it did more for his mind than two decades of meditation.

The big idea : animals shake off stress after a scare. Adults learn to suppress it. TRE uses a few exercises, like a wall sit, to tire your hip muscles until they tremor on their own.

In week one, his ring's recovery score jumped from the 70s and 80s to 95. His advice: give it five or six hours total before judging, and see a practitioner if you're carrying heavy trauma.

Also in this video : w hy shaking works (4:45), week-by-week results (10:37), how to do it (18:49), and his exclusive cheat sheet (21:16).
