TOP STORY TODAY

Pentagon Breach

Unauthorized users had access to a Pentagon personnel database from October 2025 until mid-July, when the vulnerability was found and patched. The exposed records were unencrypted and included Social Security numbers .

About 2.76 million living people were affected, plus 294,000 who have died. The database holds records for troops, veterans, civilian employees, contractors and military family members, and it runs ID verification for every Defense Department cardholder.

Officials say there's no evidence the data has been misused. Affected people are being offered a year of credit monitoring. A credit freeze is free at all three bureaus, doesn't affect your score, and blocks new accounts until you lift it.

The Other Pill

Two U.S. companies are racing to bring injectable male contraceptives to market. A gel is placed in the tubes that carry sperm, blocking them without hormones, and a second injection is meant to dissolve it.

One company says a 40-man trial dropped sperm counts to zero and is now testing whether the reversal works. It's aiming for FDA approval in 2028. The other has run a 25-man trial in Australia and raised $92.5 million.

Men currently have two options: condoms and vasectomy. Women have more than a dozen. The idea traces back to an 86-year-old Indian doctor who has worked on it for nearly 50 years. The doctor behind the original idea .

The Mars Rules

NASA's administrator ordered a rollback of the agency's spacecraft sterilization rules this week, returning to a looser 1964 standard: each Mars mission must have less than a 1-in-10,000 chance of contaminating the planet with Earth microbes.

The stricter rules replaced it in 1969, when officials assumed astronauts would reach Mars within years. The directive argues sterilization technology has improved since, and that the old rules slow exploration. Sterilization already eats roughly 10% of mission budgets. Read NASA’s memo.

The concern is that Earth bacteria could survive on Mars and make it impossible to tell alien life from hitchhikers. A review of the science is due in December, with the goal of lowering the threshold further. The full directive text .

TODAY’S LIFE ADVICE

Why Tom Hiddleston Never Skips Legs

The Perfect Lunge

Actor Tom Hiddleston ( Loki ) trained for a year to play Edmund Hillary in Tenzing ( trailer ). He cracked his fingertips and came close to frostbite.

What surprised him: climbing looks like an upper-body sport, but it isn't . You hang from one or two crampon points on the side of a boot, and all that pressure runs through your legs. His prep was lunges, deadlifts, burpees, sprints and endurance work.

His case for never skipping leg day: it's half your body, and the posterior chain is where strength, conditioning and longevity come from. You'll sleep better, think more clearly, and get stronger in your upper body too.

Asked what he'd graffiti across the world: "We all have two lives. The second begins when you realize you only have one."

14 Foods a Nutritionist Eats Every Week

Dominique Ludwig stopped counting nutrients per meal and started thinking about her 21 meals a week. Seven staples she won't skip:

  • Chickpeas. Half a tin is a third of your daily fiber. Legumes three or four times a week.
  • Tinned sardines. Omega-3s and vitamin D, plus calcium if you buy them with the bones in. Cheaper than salmon.
  • Eggs. A complete protein. Skip the egg-white omelet, since the yolk holds the iron, zinc and vitamins.
  • Frozen berries. Often more nutrients than fresh, because they're frozen right after harvest.
  • Brazil nuts. One nut covers your selenium for the day.
  • Coffee. Two to three cups is linked to lower dementia risk. Decaf counts.
  • Dark chocolate. Above 70%, it has magnesium, iron and about 10g of fiber per 100g.
